Summary

The selectee for this position will serve as a Dental Assistant in the 3d Dental Battalion/U.S. Naval Dental Center of NAVAL BRANCH DENTAL CLINIC.

Priority consideration will be given to military spouse preference eligibles residing in the commute area of the duty location for this position. Commute area is defined as the geographic area surrounding the duty location in which people can reasonably be expected to travel back and forth daily.

Military Spouses may apply 30 days before their anticipated arrival date. However, they will not receive preference until arrival at the foreign location. Additional documentation may be required prior to granting preference.

Military spouses who are appointed may not extend longer than 2 months following the transfer of the sponsor from the commuting area of the foreign duty station; 2 months beyond the separation of the appointee's sponsor; or any time beyond the time employee ceases to be a family member.

Responsibilities

The successful selectee will perform the following duties:

  • Performs chairside assistance duties in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endodontic and periodontal treatment as provided in general and specialized dentistry.
  • Keeps area of operation clear using high-speed evacuator, suction tip and irrigation; retracts tissue, tongue, and cheek.
  • Performs supragingival adult prophylaxis treatment on patients under the supervision of a dentist.
  • Operates Digital Dental Imaging (DDI) software to capture and view intra-oral and panoramic images.
  • Maintains dental equipment and operator room in a clean and operative condition.
  • Performs front desk duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Employee must possess and maintain an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate of training or be able to obtain certification within 30 days of employment.

Possess a certificate or degree in Dental Assisting from a state accredited program or possess a certificate from a military dental assistant "A" school or possess a certificate from the American Red Cross Dental Assistant training course and 12 months experience in the preceding 12 months preferred.

Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if the applicant fails to report to the scheduled drug test appointment. Incumbents of drug testing designated positions will be subject to random testing. Drug test results will be provided to the employing activity/command.

Must be able to obtain an interim and/or final Secret security clearance prior to entrance on duty AND must be able to maintain the required level of clearance while employed in the subject position. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.

Participate in four-handed sit-down dentistry, which requires somewhat regular and recurring back bending. There are short periods of standing, and walking as well.

Work involves danger of exposure to radiation and communicable diseases such as hepatitis and HIV. Assistants wear surgical mask, rubber gloves, and operating room gowns. Protective eyeglasses are required when assisting during treatments to protect against flying debris, and lead aprons and shields are used as protection against radiation. Work also involves working in the MDUs and Base Piers as necessary. The MDUs have limited facilities and employees will adjust accordingly.

Uniform will be required.

Incumbent will be required to receive seasonal influenza immunization.

Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-03 or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to this position being filled. Specialized experience for this position is experience in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to the position being filled.

OR

I have successfully completed a 2-year dental assistant program or completion of a 2-year dental hygiene program accredited by the American Dental Association's Commission on Accreditation that included at least 12 semester hours of courses in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting? OR (b) practical nurse training approved by the appropriate State, territory, or District of Columbia accrediting body.

OR

Have a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal 100 percent.

GS-05

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level GS-04 or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in dental assistance to general or specialized dentistry, dental assistant (expanded function) work, or any combination of these appropriate to this position being filled. Specialized experience for this position is providing dental chair side assistance in all phases of restorative, prosthodontic, surgical, endonotic and periodontal treatment. (Note-Education/Experience must be sustantiated in your resume).

OR

I have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in a dental assistant or dental hygiene program that included at least 24 semester hours of courses in radiation physics; radiation biology; radiation health, safety, and protection; X-ray films and radiographic film quality, radiographic techniques; darkroom and processing techniques; and film mounting.

OR

Have a combination of specialized experience and education that equates to one year of experience. The percentage of the required education plus the percentage of the required experience equal 100 percent.
